TennCare works through a health plan

TennCare is Tennessee's Medicaid program, and it covers mental health and substance use care as well as physical health. Most members do not deal with TennCare directly for day-to-day care. Instead, care is delivered through a managed care organization, or health plan, and that plan decides which providers are in network.

As of October 2026, tn.gov lists Wellpoint (formerly Amerigroup), BlueCare Tennessee and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan as TennCare health plans, along with TennCare Select, a plan for specific groups such as certain children in state custody. Plans can change, so check your TennCare card or the tn.gov TennCare site to confirm which plan you have.

Behavioral health is part of your plan

TennCare uses an integrated model, which means the same health plan that handles your physical health also handles mental health and substance use care.

TennCare's behavioral health page lists services such as psychiatric inpatient care, crisis stabilization, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, individual and family psychotherapy, medication management, peer support, supported housing, residential treatment and substance use treatment. Whether a specific service is covered for you, and under what conditions, is something to confirm with your plan.

Some of these services, particularly more intensive ones such as inpatient care, residential treatment or partial hospitalization, commonly require the plan to approve them in advance. The provider usually requests that approval, but it is worth asking who is responsible and how long it takes.

Finding in-network behavioral health care

TennCare directs members to their health plan's provider directory to find mental health and substance use providers. Directories are a starting point, not a guarantee, so always confirm by phone.

If you are looking for a child or teen, confirm that the clinician sees young people as well as that they take your plan. Tennessee also has CoverKids, a separate program for children; if your child is covered through it rather than TennCare, confirm network and coverage with that plan instead.

  • Search your plan's online directory for psychiatry, therapy or the specific service you need.
  • Call the member services number on your card and ask for help finding in-network providers who are accepting new patients.
  • When you call a practice, name your plan exactly, not just "TennCare", since a practice may work with one TennCare plan and not another.
  • Ask whether the specific clinician, not just the practice, is in network with your plan.

What to confirm before your first visit

A few minutes on the phone can prevent a denied claim or a surprise bill. Ask the practice and, where you can, your health plan. Have your TennCare card in front of you, and note the member ID and the exact plan name, because practices often need both to check eligibility.

Eligibility is checked again over time, so confirm coverage is still active before a first visit and again if there has been a long gap between appointments.

  • "Do you accept my TennCare health plan, by name?"
  • "Is this clinician in network, and are they taking new patients?"
  • "Is a referral or prior authorization needed for this service?"
  • "Will I owe anything for this visit?"
  • "Is telehealth covered the same way as an in-person visit?"
  • "If I need a higher level of care later, such as IOP or PHP, will it need authorization?"

Keeping your coverage active

TennCare coverage has to be renewed periodically. Keep your address and phone number up to date so you receive renewal notices, and respond by the deadline. If you have questions about eligibility, renewals or changing health plans, TennCare Connect can be reached at 855-259-0701, or online through the tn.gov TennCare site.

There are set windows for changing health plans. If your current plan does not include a provider you want to see, ask TennCare Connect whether and when you can switch. Before switching, check that the new plan includes your other providers too, such as your primary care provider and pharmacy, so that fixing one gap does not open another.

If a service is denied

Sometimes a plan says a service is not covered or not medically necessary. If that happens, ask for the decision in writing and read how to appeal; the notice and your plan's member services can explain the steps and deadlines. The provider's office can often help, especially with prior authorization, since they handle these requests regularly.

Keep a simple record of every call: the date, who you spoke to, what they said and any reference number. If you are told different things by the plan and the provider, that record makes it much quicker to sort out.

In a crisis

You do not need to check coverage first in an emergency. TennCare's own guidance points members to 988, by call or text, for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Common questions

Does TennCare cover therapy and psychiatry?

TennCare lists psychotherapy and medication management among its behavioral health services. Coverage for your situation depends on your health plan, so confirm with the plan and the provider before your visit.

Which TennCare health plan do I have?

Your plan name is on your TennCare card. You can also check with your plan's member services or call TennCare Connect at 855-259-0701.

Do I need a referral to see a psychiatrist on TennCare?

It depends on your plan and the service. Ask your health plan and the practice whether a referral or prior authorization is needed before you book.

Can I see a provider out of network?

Do not assume so. Ask your health plan before booking with any provider who is not listed as in network, and get the answer in writing if you can.
